The "Warrior" Baseball League

The Penn Township Athletic Association is proud to announce the development of The "Warrior" Baseball League.

The "Warrior" Baseball League is for boys and girls with physical and/or mental challenges who are between the ages of 5 and 18 (or up to 22 if still enrolled in high school). The "Warrior Baseball League is dedicated to helping children with a disability to develop and achieve their full potential; physically, mentally, and socially. The "Warrior" Baseball league is free of charge to everyone who participates.

Teams will be organized according to ability rather than age, and can include as many as 12 players who participate in a T-Ball type format. Each player will be given a T-shirt and a hat, which will promote being part of a team. The games are non-competitive in nature and will be 3 innings in length.

Every player bats in every inning, and the side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster. Players are encouraged to bat and make plays on their own, but will have a buddy assigned to them to provide guidance while on the field and in the dugout.

The program employs a "buddy" system so that help is always available on the field if needed. The role of a "buddy" is to help his/her player with batting, running, catching and throwing. Volunteer buddies will experience first-hand what it means to give back to the community as they support and encourage their players and the team. Buddies should be of high school age or older. Students in high school will earn "community service" hours for their participation.

The "Warrior" Baseball League's goal is to allow children with varying types of disabilities the opportunity to play America's favorite pastime - baseball. The "Warrior" Baseball League allows boys and girls with a disability a chance to play baseball as part of a team in an organized league.

Registration for the "Warrior" Baseball League will run through June 4, 2010. A tentative starting date for games to begin will be mid-July. Players will be notified by a phone call or email as to when the teams are formed. All games will be played at the Penn Township Municipal Park on Field #1.

The PTAA Program

Situated in the heart of Harrison City, PA Westmoreland County, PTAA maintains and operates 10 baseball / softball fields at the Penn Township Municipal Park Complex. At our fields we try to provide an exciting and safe atmosphere, in which the youth from our community and beyond our borders, can excel and triumph in the traditional American pastime. Patrons of all ages, places and backgrounds have commented on the uniqueness of our facility and conveyed their enjoyment of participating in our program.

Just to give you a little idea of the number of Youth and family members that visits the Municipal Complex during a season.

The PTAA organization reaches out to 575 - 625 area youth for the baseball program and our softball program, both slow pitch and fast pitch brings an additional 400 - 450 area youth to our fields. Games are played Monday thru Saturday, filling every available time slot, including night games on fields 1, 2, 3, and 5. In addition to our spring season, which runs thru June, we also provide a fall season which plays from late August to mid October.

Current field improvements taking place in the Municipal Complex:

1. Field Fencing: Replacement of fencing along baselines, fixing of hinge gates.

2. New nets for the Batting Cages, fence work around the cages to allow for a safer area to get some batting cage work.

3. New backstop matting will be installed during one of the work parties.
